MINA

Scary thing with my daughter. She is 22 months old, does not know how to swim yet, and yesterday at a hotel pool I watched as she slipped headfirst right over the edge and into six feet of water. Talk about that slow motion feeling. I was wearing a shirt and shoes and all and had to quickly get in there. Slipped doing it and cracked the hell out of my left shoulder going in. Almost whited out from the pain but could see her body motionless and sinking to the very bottom. So, so weird. Had to scoop her out with my one good arm and she is fine, but it is one of those crazy moments you will never forget. She was scared but otherwise unharmed. Must have instinctively held her breath upon hitting water. Yes, the swim lessons are coming soon!

That is very scary....aside from your shoulder, I'm glad that you are both okay.

Here's the American Academy of Pediatrics take on swim programs for infants and toddlers:

Personally, I can't see it hurting and your daughter would probably have lots of fun participating in it and will also learn things...but obviously still keep a close eye on her around the water. :) (Sorry, I know you're not an idiot...)

That had to have been terrifying....but thank goodness you were able to get to her quickly.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but this would've been a perfect D&D topic, as I'm sure gobs of listeners have done similar things to save people.

Glad your daughter is okay. When's the average age to learn to swim anyway?

So glad Mina id fine! How are you?? Some people will do anything to get out of work. Ooh sorry. Too early still? In all seriousness I hope your not in too much pain and glad to hear little one is OK.
I have no children of my own so my fear was probably minuscule compared to yours, but I have pulled my nephew and 2nd cousin out of pools. My nephew was about 3 and my cousins boy about the same. I had them both out within seconds. It is a weird clarity that seems to take over though.

Oh my god, thank god she is ok! That gave me chills just reading it, its one of the absolute fears we have as parents. Thank god you were able to save her and saw it happen and could react!! Just... oh my god.

I know that slow-motion, sinking feeling of watching something about to happen to a little one. It's the worst. Other than the shoulder, great outcome. Assuming she cried, I bet that cry was good to hear. What a good Daddy you are. :-)

Accidents only take a second to happen. Nice job not letting your guard down. She (and you) may have a nightmare or two. Swim lessons just got bumped up on the priority list, huh???? Fantastic to hear a happy ending to that story...but sorry about the shoulder. Let us know how your both doing. Oh, and make sure you also give us an update on the CSX thing.....truth or rumor??

Whoa, good thing you were right there. Kids have a knack for finding ways to endanger themselves, so hopefully you're not beating yourself up over it.

I started my son in swim classes at age 2 and more than anything it helped him learn not to panic in the water. He's 4 now and has a nice little dog paddle going on and can pull himself out of the water if he's near the edge of the pool. I highly recommend classes.

Jeff,

So glad to hear that this accident didn't end tragically. Kids can be so frightening some times! Happy Mina and you are ok.

Glad to hear Mina's OK, but this only goes to show that you can't leave kids that age alone ANYWHERE NEAR WATER for a second. Thank God it turned out OK, but parents always have to be vigilent.

......Glad she's fine and good thing you were there to, see, her fall in but.....why was your 22 month old daughter in the situation to where she was able to fall into the pool?

Oh my God. I actually kind of "panic inhaled" just reading your account of what happened.

And of course, it had to be an anonymous tool that accused you of bad parenting. Obviously the moron has no kids (who would want to procreate with him/her?). That kind of stuff can (and does) happen so fast even when they're a foot away from you.

On a lighter note - did you make the same noise when you hurt your shoulder as you did when you got Tased? Not sure if you watched Family Guy last night, but they had Stewie doing that reporter's job when she fell out of the grape tub and he made the same noises that the reporter did when her pain was mixed with yours. Very funny.

I did the same thing when I was about the same age, and my parents were right there and pulled me out. Kids are fast. You can't prevent everything.
