DEBATE

I watched tonight and was struck by one thing. John McCain is really short. This doesn't matter whatsoever. He' s a tougher son of a bitch than I could ever be. If I were at the Hanoi Hilton I'd be looking for the pillow concierge, so don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this to say it matters. It's just what I kept noticing. His height is listed as 5' 7". I've read both that Obama is 6' even and 6' 1". Obama looks much taller. I don't know if that's because he's standing next to McCain or if it is because he is so scrawny. Vern Troyer is still pissed that he was closed out of the debate and I agree it would have helped McCain had he been included.

Anyway, it got me wondering, so I did a little research and according to www.heightsite.com there were only three U.S. presidents shorter than John McCain. James Madison, Benjamin Harrison and Martin Van Buren. Madison was the shortest at 5' 4". The same site claims the four tallest U.S. presidents were Thomas Jefferson, Lyndon B. Johnson, Abraham Lincoln and William Jefferson Clinton. If you were to look at tallest U.S. presidents without a constant erection it would be Thomas Jefferson, Lyndon B. Johnson and Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln being the tallest at 6' 4".

Does it matter in getting elected? According to a strange wikipedia article, in elections where we knew the candidates heights, 25 times the taller candidate won, but 18 times the shorter candidate won. 3 of those 18 times though, the taller candidate won the popular vote but lost in the electoral college. So who knows.

Here's the full list. And again, yes, of COURSE I know it doesn't matter. What really matters this election year is that Sarah Palin has a nice ass.

Hate that you are "muzzled" from the airwaves at this time... you definately are passionate about subjects that affect you and it would be cool to hear you rant about kwame, tiger stadium being torn down and yes Sarah's legs...

Hey Jeff -
That is funny - and the kind of thing I miss hearing you guys talk about on the air, so don't take this the wrong way when I say - Jesus, you must be bored to death!

You've become a professional political researcher in just two posts.

Hey, what percentage of the time has a president whose taken office after the reign of an egomaniacal jackass been able to turn things around for the country?

What I found intriguing/annoying about the debate was the smirk that Obama had on his face the whole time. I am undecided at this point, but that smirk has bothered me about Obama since he first started campaigning.

I haven't seen a president elected in my lifetime who did not have a full head of hair. This plus his stature and I think McCain is in trouble!

I'm so lucky I'm just a permenent resident and don't have the right to vote. I can sit back and blame everyone else for voting the wrong guy in, which ever one it is.

Something that comes to mind. The PBS series "American Experience" did a expose' on Lyndon Johnson years ago. I've watched it many times. Johnson used his height as well as other attributes to convince various senators, etc to vote in his favor. He was the master of the art of persuasion. They said he would tower over a person and say things like "you will vote with your President!!"... and often, it worked ! He convinced George Wallace to vote in favor of the 1964 civil rights bill.
