WHAT WAS HE THINKING?
I've never liked Kwame Kilpatrick, but it wasn't because of his politics. I didn't like that he was a liar, that he clung to nepotism like birthright by proxy, that in short he abused his power. He could have been great. He had the intelligence and seemed to have the drive. At one point he was such a fast rising political star. He threw it all away ultimately over sex. What was he thinking? Had he just come clean about his affairs to begin with he may have done great things in bringing the city back. Instead he abused the e.p.u. to facilitate his getting some 'strange'. He took good cops like Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope and killed their careers, lied about them, tried to kill their reputations. What was he thinking? To make matters worse, he covered up each lie with another lie. He arrogantly let the whistle blower case go to trial. He tried to settle only when the text messages were on the line, so again, more cover-up, and that's when things were reaching the point of no return only he couldn't see it. Remember when he was on the witness stand and acted so self-righteous and indignant at the suggestion he'd had an affair with Beatty, and he went on to talk about how he had been such close friends with Beatty's husband, how their kids were all friends, how he'd never do such a thing? How do you let anything get that far and think you'll get out of it?
I think the plea bargain was fair all the way around. Kwame's pastor was on the radio today expressing his 'shock' that Kim Worthy went after jail time. Talk of the man's public humiliation being enough. Spare me. He could have spent years in prison for what he did. Others think he still should. I think with his resignation, his opting for the guilty plea (where he had to state out loud that he lied under oath more than once) over a no-contest plea, his loss of his pension, his having to pay one million dollars restitution, his loss of law license, his five year probation...given all that, I think the 120 days in Wayne County is just about right.
You could almost, almost, but not quite feel sorry for him as you watched this morning. Christine Beatty sat there looking drawn, defeated, like the woman wearing a scarlet letter. Carlita Kilpatrick looked beat up and haggard the way a president will age so quickly from the stress. But Kwame did a heroic job of looking as stoic as he could and seemed to have something left in the tank, even if it was only hubris. He even smiled a time or two, as if whistling by the graveyard of his own hopes and dreams. For all the stoicism and short smiles, occasional laughs and even his one sarcasm in court today, the eyes told a different story. They were haunted. There are stories in there that will never be told. Today he hung it all up; his job, his freedom, his money, and his lies, and watching his eyes you had to wonder, what was he thinking?

I think he was thinking of all the stuff he's done that we DON'T know about and how we never will. That even with the deal that was made, he's still managing to come out higher on top than he would have if it had gone to trial.
I think he was also thinking that his wife will shortly leave him (no reason to stand by her man anymore) and he can finally get all of the head he wants from C. Beatty while chasing the next little piece of ass.

Great write up. The last paragraph was really well thought out and cut to the quick.
I am so glad this is almost over. Now, can Detroit do the 'economically sound' thing and let Cockrel run the city until November? The city can't afford a $3M special election in May just to have te regularly scheduled election in November

So long Kwame, hate ya, glad you got taken down a peg or a dozen, you needed it! Perhaps the Detroit people will learn from this and elect someone not so overwhelmed with themself.

Jeff, I've listened to you and Bill a long time and I agree with you regarding the mayor.
I'll tell you what he was thinking, " I think what I did was forgivable and I should have been given a pass, I mean if my wife can live with it....", " I am the mayor of Detroit and everything I do should be accepted as being done in the best interest of the city", " I'm sure my charasmatic personality will get me through this as it alway has in the past".
Lastly, this isn't over. There are still many unanswered questions. People will fall, whether they are still in office or out. I expect many more investigations and future indictments. This aleged party has created a long lasting hangover.

Jeff, I don't feel sorry for this thug in the least. Watching him in court today just proved his arrogance. The fact that he said he gave up his right to be innocent until proven guilty a long time ago, just goes to show he still feels he is above the law. Watching him smile throughout the process and rarely addressing the judge as Your Honor really pissed me off. This is a GREAT day for Detroit.
I really don't think this is over yet though. I think the Feds are still gonna bring down the hammer on him, along with many others in the city. I hope they start with that ghetto trash bitch Monica Conyers.
I think I will save my prayers for someone other than Kwame and his family.
Good friggin riddance!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, all I can say is that was beautifully written.

This mayor came up with the idea of selling the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. What an idiot… The tunnel is a revenue stream (if it was not then no one would want to buy it in the first place). If you sell a revenue stream you no longer get revenue from it, all you get is a sudden influx of cash which will be gone in less than one budget cycle. So instead of finding real solutions to the problems of the city all this guy can come up with is a short sighted quick fix. Which I might add, really isn’t even a quick fix since he ate up a lot of that quick cash with the raises for his buddies.
So, with all due respect Jeff, I think your off the mark when you say “He could have been great. He had the intelligence and seemed to have the drive.” I am not impressed with his “intelligence” at all, he has not display any real intelligence in any of this or in his legitimate dealings as mayor. As for Drive, well, he apparently has a lot of sexual drive and a drive to cover everything up. So I am not exactly clear how he could have been great. I do absolutely 100% agree that the punishment is enough, it is more than I thought he would get so I am happy.

This guy's arrogance is unparalleled. I kept waiting and waiting last night for some kind of apology. Any kind of admission of guilt. Nothing. Instead he shifted HIS blame on to others and painted a picture of himself as a "victim". And if that wasn't bad enough, this guy actually had the stones to suggest a "comeback". Are you f---ing kidding me?!!? The NERVE of this prick. And maybe I'm hearing things, but did I actually hear CLAPPING last night?!!? What an absolute steaming pile of dog crap this guy is. Yeah, it's not your fault Kwame. You're a saint.

Jeff,
What a GREAT post! I think it sums everything up perfectly. I do have to say that I find it so amazing that Kwame, his wife and C. Beatty all stood in that courtroom and listened to what he had to say. That C. Beatty, a high-powered, successful, intelligent woman threw everything away for this guy, and is now a shell of the person she once was. It's amazing how sex, money and power can give people such a feeling of superiority, and how fast it can all come crashing down. Don't get me wrong, they both brought all this upon themselves. But being a female, I somehow find it even more disgusting to watch ALL the women we've seen in the case, and around the country, turn a blind eye while these guys who screw around, lie, etc. and they stand there, saying how much they love them. I'm waiting for the day one of these women goes ballistic during a live news conference and just rips one of these guys on national TV and shows and little dignity for a change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still cannot believe there are people in the city who feel that he should not have gotten jail time. Hello people do time for lying under oath all the time. Just because his arm was twisted for him to tell the truth we should say "Oh well he told the truth." Naw, my children don't get off that easy for lying under my oath so why should he? His shame should be enough? You mean the situation he CREATED for himself by having an affair. You break the law; you go to jail! My thing is where way he and Christine's faith when they were at the Residence Inn? Why where they no on the phone with the ministers then? It's a sad day when lying and cheating is not that big of a deal to people!
