QUICK UPDATE
I'm going out of town for several days so I won't be posting anything here for a week or so. Thought this would be a good time to get some folks caught up on things. If you've followed this blog from the start then you already know all this, but I keep getting more and more questions from people I meet who want to know what happened and when/if we're coming back.
Again, Bill Doyle and I decided we didn't want to stay with the CBS owned 97.1 property in Detroit when our contract was running out last year. It still amazes me how many people remain mad at the company thinking we were fired. Nothing could be further from the truth. They offered us a multi-year contract to stay (even after the format went sports) to do a non-sports morning drive show. We did that for the last 9 and a half weeks of our time there until they realized we were NOT going to re-up with them and they took us off the air after our December 7th show because local management didn't want to allow us after nearly a decade of service and good ratings to say goodbye to our listeners. It is sad and typical of the industry. So again, no, we were never 'fired'. We chose to leave and they wanted us to stay.
The next issue is why we haven't been on air since. Under our old CBS contract there was one of these onerous non-compete clauses which states that if we leave, for a period of 12 months after the end of our contract, we legally aren't allowed to accept an on-air job with another company's radio station in the Detroit market. Basically it is designed to ruin your career in a particular market by hoping the fan base will move on and forget all about you so that CBS doesn't have to compete against you. CBS made it clear they would invoke that clause, so while we entertained calls from places like Dallas, Chicago and others, Bill and I decided to tough it out with no income for one year so that we could return to Detroit. We always wanted to stay, just with a better company. Keep in mind our CBS contract technically ended on Dec. 31st of '07, meaning we cannot legally be on the air till January of '09 which is about 14/15 weeks away now. Even though they took us off the air after Dec. 7th they filled in the time with re-runs till the end of the year while they continued trying to call us about staying, so in other words that 12 month clock didn't start ticking till midnight of Dec. 31st/Jan. 1.
We'll see in January if the CBS plan worked and it rendered us forgettable and killed our careers. I hope not, because we sure haven't forgotten about all you guys!
Don't mean to bore all who already knew this. Like I said, I just get asked about it all the time and I wanted to once again clear it up. I realize people get busy and have much more happening in their lives than the goings on of one radio show.
Talk to you soon.

Is this a veiled hint that you guys already have a job lined up in Detroit sometiem soon after Dec 31, 2008?
September 22, 2008 1:29 PM
so, you decided to not work for a year, in the "hopes" of getting another gig here in Detroit, or "knowing" that you would get another gig in Detroit?
September 22, 2008 3:24 PM
I haven't forgotten about you guys! You two moved to Michigan about the same time I did in 1999, so I always related to you in that way.
Thanks for the updates!
September 22, 2008 3:38 PM
hey thanks for the recap. and thanks for reminding us of what you and bill have had to go thru just to keep your plan to stay in detroit. no income for a year? how the hell are you doing it? wow. i know that *i* will be one of the faithful waiting and listening for any news of you two back on the air - i miss the show so much. hope you can hang in there til january and best of luck whatever path this crazy life takes you. xo, ardy :)
September 22, 2008 4:11 PM
Even though I may be busy.... I still concern myself of the happenings of one show.. because I miss you guys!!!! I hope there is something lined.. I can't wait!!!
September 22, 2008 6:25 PM
its been a tough year without you guys!
I still find myself tuning into 97.1 during my drive home and forgetting that you guys are gone.
hope to be able to tune to you guys in '09!
September 22, 2008 6:51 PM
Jeff, damn near every person I know loved and misses your show.
My MySpace page as the title "Deminski and Doyle Rules!", and I've received more email about that than anything. Trust me, your fans will be there. IF some were lost, you'll make more I'm sure of it.
Everyone misses you and you'll see that when you are back on the air.
September 22, 2008 6:55 PM
I check your blog regularly in the hopes that there's a deal in the works. I really miss you guys and can't wait for your return to the Detroit airwaves! Thanks for keeping us updated.
September 22, 2008 7:06 PM
I can't wait for you guys to get a new job in Detroit, I'm sick of hearing 3 sports shows talk about the exact same topics as each other every single day.
September 22, 2008 7:11 PM
I've listened to you guy's almost religiously since I first came across you program some 5 years ago. 2008 has sucked not hearing you guys on the air. You know, one way around your non-compete clause is to get a job with a station over here in Windsor, since we are not part of the Detroit market, yet you can be heard by all your loyal fans.. you know, there is a great rock station here that could use a great morning crew (100.7 - The ROCK)
September 22, 2008 7:15 PM
If I have to listen to Mitch Albom much longer I am going to puke. Please hurry back.
My seven year even misses you. He loves the "You lose, you get nothing, good day sir!" drop. It's a favorite at our house.
September 22, 2008 7:24 PM
I like the Windsor idea, but I bet CBS considered that. Not sure about what your plans are but I would prefer you guys in the afternoon. I can listen longer without being interupted.
I understand that if you have a possible station lined up you will not be able to say anything. Is there a date when you can announce that you are returning?
Thanks

Stop teasing us and spill the beans already!! If YOU can't and have a station lined up put some pressure on them to get some advertising rolling so when know the when and where when you guys light the candle on this thing! Even a "change is coming" campaign from them is all WE need to know what's up. The first event you do should be the return of the Spring Carnival...
September 22, 2008 10:32 PM
You haven't been forgotten, believe me. Of course, I think your best chance at success will be afternoons on an FM station. 106.7 seems to be in need of a format change. How does this sound? Drew and Mr.Skin mid-day, D&D afternoon, Parker and the Man in the evening. Somebody else will have to figure out what to do for a morning show.
September 22, 2008 10:41 PM
Thanks for loving your fans here in D-town & know you DO have a diehard fan base that returns that love right back!!

I am counting down the days till my radio can breathe a sigh of relief again, and have the sound of D&D coming out of it. Miss listening to you guys. Hoping that when you DO come back on the air, that you are able to bring Rudy along too. D&D just wouldn't be the same without him. Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for deciding to stay in the Detroit market...even though you had to go a year without an income. I'm sure it will be a bit rough when you first come back on the air, but don't start to think that maybe you've made a mistake...it will get better than it ever was at 97.1, and those suckers are gonna regret losing you. Thanks for all the updates on your status. Take care.
September 23, 2008 8:16 AM
I can't wait to have you guys back on air here in Detroit. It's been a loooong year, but your fans haven't forgotten you!
September 23, 2008 8:18 AM
I will never forget about you guys. I miss you every day!!!
September 23, 2008 8:40 AM
Of course we haven't forgotten you, and we're waiting for your return! Hang in there...we are.
September 23, 2008 8:56 AM
I don't doubt that a new deal for 2009 was in place a long time ago and perhaps D&D are getting a small stipend as part of the deal.
Hanging around Detroit for a year hoping to secure a gig would be insane. If there wasn't something on the table I think Jeff and/or Bill would have been outta here like shit through a goose a long time ago.
I suspect the "hints" regarding the new show will start ramping up soon.
It'll be good to hear D&D back on the air.
September 23, 2008 9:01 AM
Detroit misses you guys. Can't wait to hear you back on the air soon!
September 23, 2008 9:40 AM
Other than religion and sports, there is NO talk radio to speak of in Detroit. We shall welcome your return to the air waves in January. My ideal line up would be Deminski & Doyle in the morning, Gregg & Moochelle middays and Drew Lane in the after drive.
September 23, 2008 10:33 AM
To the person who commented about the small stipend...no, I get NOTHING, good DAY sir! Oh, and to the person who commented about Windsor...no, contractually that was never a legal option.
Thanks all!
Jeff Deminski
September 23, 2008 10:40 AM
Were all just waiting!
September 23, 2008 10:41 AM
I'm hoping that you'll be on a station that will stream your show online; moved out of state about 3 years ago and used to listen to you that way. I miss ya guys!
September 23, 2008 11:33 AM
I wish for continued success to the both of you in Detroit. Myself and several others would love to hear you guys on another station in the very near future. about four year ago i became hooked on your show since everyone my sales office listend to your show to get us through the day.
September 23, 2008 12:41 PM
Who the Fxxx are you again?I forgot. Just kidding. I have been waiting for you guys to get back on the air so that I can bitch at Beaver about causing me to get "Paper Mache" ass. I keep trying the wipe my ass with the wet toilet paper trick that Beaver uses. I end up haveing to get to beat my ass with a stick like a Mexican peniata after it dries! Good Luck in negociating the contract that it sounds like someone could be working on in an un mentioned City who may or may not have a felon for an ex Mayor
September 23, 2008 2:04 PM
I believe that Jeff and Bill stayed in the Detroit area because #1 They have established roots here.#2 Jeff has started what sounds like a great family here #3 They would be hard pressed to find better fans then us A-- holes anywhere in the country. We arn't making any damn money either.#4 I'm here #5 I imagine Jeff has a long scraggly beard like Michele Keaton "Mister Mom" and he can get a cheap haircut around hear in December when the come back on the air at WHZTK the High School station at Hazel Tuckey High School! Just kidding. Ya want to hire me for a writer yet? See Ya
September 23, 2008 2:14 PM
I moved far from the Detroit area over two years ago; so I missed all the drama of your leaving the station. But I used to be a loyal listener and still miss the old show. I check-in on this site now and then and look forward to the resurrection of your partnership on the air. I'd like to see it happen right back in the Motor City. You guys are there, Da Mayor and hopefully Matt Millen are gone; and I'm listening on the internet. Hope you find interesting replacements for Rudy and Beaver!
September 23, 2008 4:01 PM
I'm the one that speculated that you MIGHT have worked out a deal and negotiated a little good faith moola to get you through the no-compete clause.
Having said that. . . you deny receiving a stipend, Mr. Deminski yet you do not deny a deal is in place for 2009. I put it to you, good sir, that your future in Detroit radio is already a done deal. Furthermore I suspect you have been instructed not to talk about this deal until a pre-determined date but you are bursting at the seams to let the cat out of the bag.
Anyone that bumps into Mr. Deminski at a local watering hole would be well advised to pump him full of fermented liquid until he spills the beans and tells us which station to program into our car radios.
I don't have all day!
September 23, 2008 4:32 PM
Am I the only one that wants D&D on in the mornings? Mornings in Detroit is absolutely horrible, and I can't afford my Sirius anymore. Hurry up and get on the air damn it :) miss ya guys.
September 23, 2008 6:01 PM
I can't WAIT til you guys come back. I find myself missing your theme song I miss hearing you guys so much. My friends and I joke around using all your drops. there's no way that you guys have lost your fan base around here.
Looking forward to hearing you back on the radio waves,
-km
September 23, 2008 6:03 PM
"I realize people get busy and have much more happening in their lives than the goings on of one radio show."
Are you kidding? There is no other radio show!!! I haven't found anything worth listening to since you guys left the air. I think there are thousands of us waiting for you to come back!!
Can't wait until you can "compete" again.
September 23, 2008 6:30 PM
I can't wait to hear you guys including Rudy again! I guess Beaver is gone forever. You made your daily 4 hour show feel like 5 minutes. It's was never long enough. And I feel that one major reason for that was the chemistry between the four of you. Even if D&D can't get Rudy (oh, the horror!) you guys are just the best. Cannot wait to hear you guys again!!
September 23, 2008 10:23 PM
Forget you guys???? That would never happen!!! You guys are awesome. Thanks for keeping us posted...I can't wait to hear you guys again! I find myself listening to the same Jim Nabors CD all day long!!!!
September 23, 2008 11:05 PM
Talk to me soon huh? Well, thanks for the warning and I can only hope I "hear" you sooner.
Oh and guess what? You'll have fresh new drops when you join us again!
September 24, 2008 4:31 AM
Ok just thought of this. You guys came in as nothing (to us) in what 99? When you left in 07 you were beloved in the D. When you guys come back you already have thousands who know who you are. Whether they love or hate you (besides cyclists I don't know who hates you)they know you. In my opinion that is a good thing in the public eye.
BTW my word verification is scrwcbs. Think that is an omen?
September 24, 2008 4:44 AM
Here's one more vote for afternoon drive. When I got home I often continued to listen 'cause I was glued to the topic. The sports muscle heads on 97.1 drive home cannot even speak proper English half of the time. I'd hire you guys to just sit in the back of my car and have a conversation.
September 24, 2008 9:01 AM
PLEASE come back, and preferably in the afternoons! My hubby and I and all of our co-workers miss you guys!!!
September 24, 2008 9:52 AM
I'm having to fill my time in the car with Sirius, but when you guys climb back on the broadcast tower, I'm dropping it. Can't wait!
September 24, 2008 10:28 AM
All hail D&D! It has been a long and dry 2008 without you guys indeed! I even valiantly tried to stomach Jay & Bill but, well, it's just sad how their work is so far behind yours.
I can't wait for the (hopefully) impending announcement of your reappearance on the Detroit air waves. Like I said before, I have access to a west-side bar that can comfortably fit 150-200 for a listener party to kick things off too!
September 24, 2008 10:44 AM
I don't even live in the D anymore, and I haven't forgotten you. One of the hardest things about moving out of Michigan was tuning the station to 97.1 during drivetime and getting, er, static.
Of course, I was living in Monterey at the time, so it was all bad. Still.
I still get back to Detroit at least once a year and, believe me, it sucked coming back this past year and not having D&D a part of it. Kind of like staggering home drunk to find everything in my apartment gone. Even having my carpet gone and replaced with another carpet.
September 24, 2008 11:02 AM
Jeff,
Thanks for the update. I'll just echo everyone else: can't wait to have you guys back!
September 24, 2008 1:13 PM
I cannot WAIT until you guys come back on the air. And all my friends that listend to the show can't wait either. This has been a very very long year.
September 24, 2008 1:17 PM
I can hardly wait until the show returns. My entire family listens to you guys. Your recent shows and topics were always being discussed at family get-togethers. I think one thing about us Detroiters is we are LOYAL to anyone who is loyal and truthful with us. So as painful as it has been for you guys, you know when you return we'll all just show you even more love for hanging in there for us.
We await the long anticipated return of D&D to our airwaves. And we'll be here waiting.
September 24, 2008 7:53 PM
hi jeff yes you guys are missed remember we detroiters are loyal fans.i have listened to u guys since a ex-D&D fanatic fan named downtown bob(or rob) turn me on 2
the show and have listen ever since.and miss u guys alot and i know if bob was still with us he may have went over and burned cbs radio down.my boss and still talk about how he always had to listen to u guys and call in cant wait till jan 09 miss u tell bill please to try and post some of his wackiness lov to hear from him again
September 24, 2008 9:07 PM
January '09 cannot get here fast enough....My afternoons just aren't the same. Hurry back!!!!
September 24, 2008 9:07 PM
We appreciate you guys sticking it out for us over the last 91/2 months. I'm counting down the days when you guys are back on the air again. I too was hooked from the first time I heard you -which by the way - was the day of the power outage a few years ago. Rudy definitely has to join your team again - won't be quite the same without him.
September 25, 2008 12:29 PM
You guys aren't forgotten and you'll have an audience when you start up in January with your new gig.
September 25, 2008 4:01 PM
I remember it was about a year ago that I turned on my radio after work and discovered...you weren't there. My heart broke! All of the fascinating news these days(Kwame, the presidential election) has been pretty dry without your spin on it. Believe me, I am waiting with great anticipation for your return!!
September 26, 2008 9:21 PM
We ALL miss you guys (D&D, Rudy and the Beave) SO much! I cannot understand why there aren't more comments posted here that cheer for you to come back! It doesn't make any sense to me. D&D together are magic, but the production (Beave) and Rudy just made the show perfect and such a breath of fresh air in local radio. If you can't come back to Detroit or MI, please let us know where we can find you on our dials or online/live streaming?!
These days are tough on us all and if you guys can make us laugh just a few hours a day, it would make life a bit more easy live! Thanks!
September 28, 2008 9:21 PM
I can't wait to hear you guys on the radio again. It was the best show in Detroit! Would doing a POD cast break the no contest clause? Or would you and Doyle not be into the POD cast market? Wanted to also say thanks again for the attention your show gave my music. You played a song I did using your dads music as samples, I got some pretty good feedback from that. So again thanks and can't wait to hear you guys back on the air here in Detroit.
September 29, 2008 11:06 AM
I, too, have not forgotten D&D, you always made my drive home a good one!! I'm waiting for your triumphant return to Detroit radio!
September 29, 2008 1:22 PM
So I guess you guys have already signed somewhere but can't say where because the new station wants to try to remain competitive until the change happens?
September 29, 2008 2:45 PM
Supersize, I don't know if you are the only one who wants them on in the morning, but considering that my morning commute is 4:40am to 5am, I prefer them in the afternoon. If the show is on in the morning and you are on first shift Mon-Fri and start at a normal time like 8 or 9, you can only hear the show during your drive to work. If they are on in the afternoon, you can hear the show during your drive home and/or picking up the kids from school, and after you get home. If the show ends up in the morning, I'll have to hope that it is a station that streams and that Orbit Downloader can record.
September 29, 2008 10:09 PM
I still remember you guys and will always remember you guys. Cant wait for jan 1st, hopefully hear you guys soon.
September 29, 2008 11:22 PM
It'll be nice to have you on the radio (mornings or afternoons... don't care as long as D & D is back!) and sharing your wisdom... I really missed your take on all the Detroit Drama!
September 30, 2008 9:51 AM
And I fully expect a welcome back party at the radio station of your choosing.
I simply cannot wait until the day I get to hear your intro song again.
LOL! @ "I'd hire you guys to just sit in the back of my car and have a conversation."
September 30, 2008 8:16 PM
FUCK CBS and FUCK YOU Detroit!! why don't you guys just come back to the place that treats you right, New Jersey! maybe you could get a slot on NJ 101.5 again or another local talk station.
And by the way the Lions SUCK, Redwings SUCK and Tigers SUCK!! Go Giants! Go Devils and Go Yankee!!
October 1, 2008 12:43 AM
Hey Anonymous NJ:
D&D chose unemployment over going back to your god forsaken state! Enough said.
YOU LOSE, YOU GET NOTHING, GOOD DAY SIR!
October 1, 2008 11:31 PM
D&D you guys will kick CBS' butt outta the water when you get back. I'm hopeing for a morning show since there are none worth listening to since Drew left Wrif, but any time slot will be good!!!! We'll be hear waiting for ya.
October 3, 2008 4:42 PM
I still tune into 97.1 even though I hate sports radio, you guys made it my default station and it is hard to break the habit.
They do a horrible job of programming on 97.1 and every show has the same topics! I realize there is alot of money in sports radio so I can see why 97.1 switched, but it's too bad they couldn't have made room on another station for D&D.
I look forward to hearing you guys again so I can find a new station to listen to all the time.
If I had to guess it would be 93.1, they need some more exposure to become a top rated station and D&D in the afternoons would put them back on the map. I just hope it happens soon so D&D can get some cash and we can finally get some good radio again in Detroit!
October 4, 2008 10:54 AM
It's been a year, but you're certainly not forgotten! I'm looking forward to hearing you guys back on the air!
October 5, 2008 8:43 AM
D&D, mornings on WCSX.
No brainer, IMO.
Mock me now... you'll see!
October 6, 2008 4:22 PM
I can't wait to hear you guys on the Radio again! I'm a dedicated and loyal fan, been listening since about 2001, and I'm still listening to the handful of podcasts I downloaded from 97.1 before you left. Well I hope you guys have the some of a fan base, as always when you go away you'll lose some fans, but no me. With the no compete clause can you look for contracts and sign with another radio station before the deadline and just not go on air until January of 09 (I doubt that other stations would sign you like that, but just wondering).
-Curtis
Raised on some good ole' D&D!
(1st Open House segment on Vampires & Segment on are there any wholesome Women left)
October 7, 2008 11:02 AM
PLEASE come back in the afternoons! I miss your show so much!
October 8, 2008 9:57 PM
My gf and I can't wait to see (hear) you and Bill back on the air. Jan. 2009 with D&D would be the start of a good year. And all of us in the area could use some good news.
You guys aren't forgotten and all of your fans would certainly love to hear you guys again.
October 10, 2008 11:54 AM
Jeff,
You guys are great and it would be awsome if you could both come back. You were my ride home after work. Something about listening to you guys made the rough ride home more manageable. So, in other words, we have not forgotten about you. We look forward to hearing you on the air again soon.
Carl
October 12, 2008 2:05 PM
Just discovered your blogging site and I am so excited to finally hear what happened and know you could potentially be back on the air in 09. I am a dedicated listener and you guys have been missed!!!
October 15, 2008 10:50 PM
Chiming in late here to say we haven't forgotten you guys! We'll be looking forward to your triumphant return!
