OLD BITCH IN THE PARKING LOT

I had my kids out the other day. It was me, my 3 year old son and 20 month old girl. I had just parked my Explorer outside a discount store. Non-compete clauses invoked by CBS equals frequent visits to discount stores. It was raining, so I was glad I found a good spot not too far from the doors. I had just gotten out of the car and had Jack's door open, was about to unbuckle him, when the entire car lurched with a loud BANG.

A car had been backing out of a space and ran right into my back bumper. This was no tap.

The car starts driving away. I close my son's door and run alongside then in front of the car, yelling for it to stop. Wouldn't you know it. 85 year old looking woman driver. Once she stops I walk to her window where she's already got her excuse ready. It's important to point out that she KNEW she hit me and was driving off anyway. She knew she hit me because before I could say anything she says, "Oh, the back window is broke and doesn't roll down anymore so I didn't see ya - "

I cut her off with something about it not mattering; that she hit my car and was running away.
I would submit if you have to lower a glass window to see, perhaps you shouldn't be driving.
At this point her eyes narrowed and she dropped her I'm-just-a-poor-sweet-old-grandma-so-you-have-to-feel-sorry-for-me bullshit.

"And you're gonna make a big stink about it!?" she says to me. I hadn't even looked at my car yet, but the point was she knew she hit me and she was going to leave the scene!

I tell her damn right I'm going to, that I'm going to call the cops since she was taking off. I then went to look at my car and she got out to survey it with me. I could not believe, with how hard our car rocked, that there was no visible damage. It was one of those things where the bumpers just lined up perfectly and took it just right. So she sees no damage then says to me, "And what are you going to show them?"

I knew exactly what she was getting at. It was more in her body language than what she'd said. "So if I call a cop out here what are you saying? That you're going to lie and say you never hit me?"

This old, twisted bitch says, "Exactly."

At this point, with my kids out of earshot still tucked in the car, I called her a few choice words, and she gets in her car and arrogantly starts to drive off. Now the rain is coming down hard. I had her plate number. I could have called. Maybe I should have called. But it's raining, I have a 3 year old and a 20 month old who would get crankier by the minute as we'd sit around and wait. And I can imagine in the end nothing would have been done about this old bat. We are seeing more an more movement towards bigger easier to read road signs and wider traffic lanes all to accommodate people who should instead be dealt with harshly. I suppose what bothered me most about all this is many of us have this image of the poor doddering old driver who doesn't even know the havoc they're causing and can only see their independence slipping away. But here was a woman who was probably a bitch when she was 25, still a bitch whe she was 45, still at 65 and even now when she was 85, and who couldn't physically handle driving any longer but was mentally still with it enough to know right from wrong. And chose wrong over right.

Good to see this rant from you Jeff. It's pissy moments like this that make me miss the conversation of the show.

Glad to hear that there was no damage to your car or especially the kids.

I work in retail, so I know first hand how nasty old people can be. They will rip us to shreds for being out of one item that they are looking for when the store carries 10,000 items.

I get what you are saying about the no-compete causing frequent trips to the discount store. No matter how much you were making, it has to be hard to go a year without income. I really appreciate that you guys chose to stay here instead of going out of state. I just hope you end up on an FM station instead of a weak signal AM station like Parker and the Man did. I will still listen to your show no matter where you end up, but most people I know who listened to 97.1 when you guys were on refuse to listen to AM.

I kind of know how you feel. I had an 85 year old man run me off the road last year. When are they going to institute mandatory, yearly examinations to those over a certain age?
Glad you and your children are okay.

And I thought I was the only one who could attract assholes/bitches with such raw effeciency.

They just follow you around, don't they Jeff?

I did one time get yelled at by this guy (I'm guessing he was 70'ish) because I didn't put my cart in the cart corral when I was done with it at the grocery store. "You're just going to leave that there?!" My reply was "Yeah". His follow up remark was "Well, that's just fuckin lazy!"

I feel yer pain.

In my honest opinion, I would call just to make a police report. There are so many instances where you or a loved one may get hit, and not feel any injury at the moment, but that could change in the next couple of days. If the kids start complaining about headaches, or their neck has pains in it. You have her plate number, just be on the safe side, for your kids sake.

Jeff, you should have reported her. Last March, a week before Easter, a 65 yr old lady backing out of a parking space, hit a woman I knew, then put the car in drive, dragged her 10-20 feet and killed her in front of 2 of her 3 kids. She too, "didn't see" anyone. These drivers need to be taken off the road. It makes me sick.

You should have called the cops anyway, just to get it on record.

Not to add insult to injury, but calling the cops probably wouldn't have lead to anything. In Michigan if there is less than $1000 in damage to the vehicle the police do NOT have to take a report by law, and most departments simply refuse to file a report if there is (in their estimation) less than $1000 in damage. The department I work for is the only one I know of that takes a report regardless of how little damage there is, but for the most part it is practically unheard of.

Plus it was off-roadway, so even if they did take a report it wouldn't have had any penalty for her (other than possibly having to file a claim on her own car, but no legal repercussions.)

So, basically the bitch would have gotten of scott-free regardless of whether or not you called the cops... I guess the moral of the story is to just let it go.

That's messed up - I don't blame you for being pissed! I've seen older drivers that I truly feel sorry for; but I have absolutely NO sympathy for this one. (And you hit the nail on the head; if she acted that much of a bitch with you; she's been one all of her life.) If someone is truly apologetic and admits their mistake, that's one thing...but to USE her age to try to make people feel sorry for her, or worse yet, tell a LIE, is so beyond wrong. Not too long ago my Mom was commenting about how rude an older neighbor of hers was. I reminded her that being a jerk has no age limit... we forget that older folks can be assholes too. Good job on using such restraint in this situation. And remember, that phrase "what goes around comes around" has no age limit, either, so she'd better watch out!

They DO need to mandate a yearly check up for the elderly.. I hate to say it but these older people have a hard time seeing, they cause havoc and just plain need to be off the road.. maybe we should add a "taxi" credit to their SSI check on a monthly basis to get them off the road..

nothing worse than an senior citizen with a fucking "i don't care i'm old and i can do what i want" attitude. except the guy wearing the "don't forget my senior citizen discount!" t-shirt that i saw the other day. fuck him. and fuck all of them - just because you're old and you get discounts and you're 300 pounds and you forgot how to wash yourselves and you think everyone in the fucking world owes you just because you're fucking old doesn't give you the right to do the wrong thing. i thought that because you ARE old you should be smarter and wiser - guess not. by the way, i took my mom's car keys away from her when she turned 70. that was 10 years ago. she wasn't a bad driver, never had an accident, it's just that we both agreed she'd be better off not driving anymore. so yeah. and while i'm in such a good mood, thanks for the update, jeff and i cannot fucking wait until you and bill and (maybe?) rudy are back on the air. xo, rd.

Take the truck to the dealer or a body shop and have it looked at. Remember the Mustang incident and how much damage was caused by that little little pipe sticking up out of the street?! The plastic bumpers on the cars/suvs hide a lot of damage, and there are energy absorbers and impact bars under the plastic that are only good for one shot, so if you get rear ended again the cushion that absorber provides is gone and you will take the full brunt of the hit. Don't wait too long the police don't have to take a report after 48 hours, so if there is damage you have to turn in the claim to the insurance company and they will have to go after the lady with only your word, and no official report to back it up.

Yes, you should have reported it when she was still on the scene, no matter how bad the rain was and how bad your babies were fussing. People feel bad for the elderly who cause accidents and they shouldn't. Remember a few years ago when some 80ish year old plowed through a crowd at a farmers market and killed several people? The judge slapped him on the wrist and sent him home with NO punishment. Either one of your children could have suffered whiplash or anything else. Something tells me that your wife would have went off on that old bitty, right there in the parking lot....and yes...in the pouring rain, and would have called the police and put it on record and rightly so.
We can't keep letting these feeble old people drive these potentially deadly weapons (cars).

Stop feeling sorry for them.

One big reason to call the cops, regardless, is something that happened to me a few years ago. I was cut off by another driver on Telegraph who hit the front of my car with the rear of hers as she moved into my lane. I hit the brakes and ran up the curb as she kept driving. There was NO WAY she didn't know she hit me. But she kept going.

I got out - pissed obviously - and surveyed the damage and, believe it or not, there wasn't any. I checked a few more times just to be sure and I calmed down a little bit and then I left the scene.

The next day there was a knock on my door and it was a cop. Long story short, I got a ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. I don't know how she got my license number or if maybe there was a friend following her or what. But I got the ticket. I tried to explain to the cop at the time, and I think he believed me, but was essentially told, "tell it to the judge."

So regardless of the situation, I advise everyone to call the cops if only to cover your own ass.

What are you all talking about? This has nothing to do with age, I have been hit in the exact same situation by 20+ year olds. And I have certainly had younger people have serious attitudes with me. Your right, if she is in her 80's it probably is time to give it up but nothing you said here is exclussive to old people.

Are you kidding me?! That is horrible. First, I'm glad that everyone was safe...but wow. What a horrible person that woman is!

At first I was thinking some cops that are D&D followers should contact you to pay her a little visit. :)

But honestly, I would go ahead and file a report - if nothing else, to be on record in the event she does this to someone else. That way she can't lie her way out of it a second time....and it just adds validity by having other documented instances.

I hope there isn't a second time for her, but by the sounds of it, it's pretty likely. Sad....

That's outrageous, Jeff. I understand why you chose to let it go, but in the long run, I think you should have reported the old hag! She probably has been getting away with this sort of thing for decades, and maybe this would have been a little push to get her old bitchy ass off the road.

Not to mention that since it was in a parking lot, that's considered private property. The cops woudln't have come out anyway. I have the same thing happen. They wouldn't come out for it. Unfortunately, I had over $2000.00 which we paid for out of pocket on the advise of a good friend in the insurance industry. Our friend said that if you can pay for anything under $3,000.00 out of pocket since it will eventually raise your rates. You'll end up paying more in the long run.

Also, you should have asked her to see her drivers license so you know how to contact if your babies showed signs of being hurt. Those things can show up after the fact. when I was in an car accident, I walked around on broken ankle for 2 hours without any pain.

Glad everything worked out. We can't wait until your return in 09.

Here's one for you Jeff. My coworker's vehicle is in for service, so she was on her way to the dealership with her rental vehicle to drop off some paperwork last week. She's on the I-94 off ramp to Metro Parkway when she gets rear ended. She gets out of the rental vehicle and goes to the car behind her. The driver is late 50s or so and looks out of it. While my coworker is inspecting the damage, the bitch that hit her starts to pull away and roars off down Metro Parkway. My coworker adopts a "oh no you di'int" attitude and takes off after her dialing 911. After chasing her for several miles, the other driver pulls off onto a dirt road to try and turn around and my coworker blocks her in. Within minutes there are cops, EMS, and fire officials there. The lady reeked of booze and had pills all over the passenger seat. She was taken away.

Good news is the rental vehicle had a trailer hitch and that's what the crazy bitch hit; just scratches. My coworker was unhurt as well.

"You're a nasty bitch that no one likes....bitch!" I miss that drop.

I had the same thing happen to me once in front of the royal oak post office. I was parallel parked and loading up my kids. Some ass-hat slams into the front of my vehicle and just hops out and goes into the post office. I pulled into the next lane about 3 inches from his driver's door.

This penis wrinkle has the gall to tell me to move because he wanted to get into his car! My car was a piece of shit so I could care less about any damage, but I wanted an apology just on principle. I refused to move until he acknowledged that he hit my car and said he was sorry.

It WORKED! The old milkshake begrudgingly muttered out "I'm sorry for hitting your car" and looked like he felt like the total douche that he was. I can't tell you how satisfying it was to belittle that arrogant ball hair like that.
