DREAM CRUISE
I live very near Woodward. Today (Friday, a day before Dream Cruise) at 1 in the afternoon, I needed to drive on it between 14 and 13 Mile. That one mile took me about ten minutes. I do not mind one bit.
Everyone is entitled to their feelings, and I know so many folks who live near Woodward who hate this time of year. Neighbors who abandon their homes and head up north for four days just to avoid it. I get that it can feel like an inconvenience. I also get that almost anything can feel like a pain in the ass if you let yourself be negative and look at it the wrong way.
People make fun of the guys who'll park their cruisers and just sit next to them all day, waiting for someone to come ask them questions about it it seems. In a not serious way, I've even kidded guys like that. But truth is I'm so glad they're there. Dream Cruise makes a special part of the country even more fantastic. Dream Cruise let's the soul of our area come out to play once a year. You can be an elitist and make fun of "blue collar rednecks staring at cars" all you want, but isn't the working man what made and still makes this entire region? You can complain about the crowds, but isn't there something field-of-dreamesque about how they will come every year? Isn't there a certain energy you can't help but tap into when you take in the sight of a 64 and a half Mustang and a Rolls Royce and a black & white Blues Brothers mobile all within a hundred feet of each other? People who don't get Dream Cruise don't get that it's not just about cars. It's about all walks of life drawing together and tapping into that which we still have in common...that common ground of romantic nostalgia (not just for cars but for each of our own pasts) and camaraderie, all in a free event that is shockingly trouble free year after year. The smell of burning tires and exhaust mixed with food and the occasional beer to me is intoxicating.
Maybe it's because the very first thing I experienced when I moved here years ago was Dream Cruise. I had rented a small home in Beverly Hills, not far at all from Woodward, and the very day I rolled into town was the day of Dream Cruise, the real one, the Saturday itself. It was 1999. I was tired from the drive in from the east coast, and I knew nothing about where to go buy food, gas or anything else for that matter. I was nervous to be starting this brand new show in 48 hours with no time to prepare a damn thing. And I walked up 14 Mile Rd. to Woodward to this amazing sight. I'd never seen anything like it. The vibe I got from all the people I saw and the few I talked to was tremendous. I'm from the east coast, where everyone is uptight and closed down. These people were still tough, but real, and open, and not afraid to have a good time, and I was instantly sure I'd made the right decision in taking the job.
So maybe I just associate Dream Cruise with everything else I love about Michigan all rolled into one. They say first impressions are lasting. '08's been a tough year, riding out this non-compete clause and all. But I'll stand on Woodward tomorrow and see the dads with their kids, smell the burning rubber, the cooking food, watch three generations at a time take in the past, hear the thunder of engines defying the green movement like rockstars that never get old, check out the Michigan girls who are the hottest in the whole world, stare at the coolest damn machines dreamed up by your fathers and grandfathers, and feel so damn lucky to be there looking at the past and looking forward to the future.

Cool post Jeff...my eyes welled up. I feel the same about the cruise. I love just to go there for a little while and take in the sights and sounds. Some of those cars are really cool. My favorite is the 1957 Chevy. Deb

I really hate the Dream Cruise. It's the world's biggest traffic jam is what it is. Gathering to look at classic cars is one thing, but sooo many of the cars on Woodward for that thing are mini vans, SUVs, etc. It's an excuse to party and be "seen". It's like all of those jackasses who pretend to be Red Wing and Piston fans after they win a title, just so they can have an excuse to party at the parade (these people couldn't name even a handful of players on the team they claim to be fans of). The Dream Cruise is a major headache. Forget about going anywhere NEAR Woodward in under an hour-and-a-half. I'm always happy when it's over.

PS What's even MORE annoying is all of the a-holes who think it starts August 1st. Lawn chairs on Woodward 2 WEEKS EARLY?!!? Get a life people. Jeez

Public events like the Dream Cruise are important to the health and identity of the communities that they are in. We need to celebrate vintage cars in Detroit, cherries in Traverse City, Fish Flies in Anchor Bay, groundhogs in Punxsutawney so on. They provide the life that a prvious poster said we need to get. By they way, tomorrow will be my first Dream Cruise in 40 years of life-long Metro Detroit residency.

That was a nice post Jeff, and quite different from your past rantings about the Dream Cruise on air. I suppose when a person is stressed out and has deadlines and job schedules it changes their point of veiw, but this year you're able to enjoy it!
I logged on tonight to email you about this very thing and ask that you talk about it, but you beat me to it! I don't live down there anymore so I feel out of the loop.
But, I DO live in Grand Blanc and there is a Back To The Bricks cruise up and down Saginaw St. between downtown Flint and Grand Blanc. I went with my parents in their '62 Comet last night. It was really fun. They're in their 60's and I'm 36, so it was fun just to see them happy again for a little while.
They went to the Woodward Dream Cruise a couple of years ago and vow never to return because it has become too commercial and overrun with "riff-raff" , ya know, young idiots with their Japanese, new super-sport cars and douche bags driving around with huge pictures of fetuses on their anti-abortion vans, etc.
I don't know how it is this year ( Woodward ) because you guys ( who rocked my world ) aren't on air right now, but I hope it's improved since past years.
Everybody reading: Back To The Bricks! It's much more layed back and stress free. Come up north for a stress-free, less commercialized cruise this weekend!

Well said Jeff. Some people just don't get it. Stay away if you don't like it. It's not for everyone, but the feeling you get seeing so many people from all walks of life (without bickering and fighting) enjoying this event is such a wonderful thing for Michigan. Thanks Jeff for sharing your view of the Dream Cruise. Have fun tomorrow. Kat

nice post, jeff. got a lil teary eyed, i must say. when you live down there, it can either make you happy or piss you off. happens wherever events come close to residential areas. but it's a great temporary thrill for an area that needs to be thrilled recently. a bright spot for a dulled reputation. take it or leave it, it's fun and (most) people are happy and the sun shines and music plays...you get the picture. sidenote: a PT cruiser is *NOT* a classic car. please don't get it all shined up thinking you're a badass lining up behind that GTO or camaro. don't be *that guy*.... (not directed at you, jeff - just at those who like to drive in the cruise with their stupid *not classic* cars. :) rock on, ardy

Good post Jeff, I love the concept of the Dream Cruise. I've a;ways loved the classic cars and would love to have my own one day.
As a person who travels for a living, I see the Dream Cruise from a different point of view. Being from the Detroit area, I know to avoid that area at all cost this time of year if I had a delivery in the area. A trucker and sales person from out of town may not know this.
Since the start on the Dream Crise many years ago, I always thought the perfect location for such a cruise would be Edward Hines Drive. On Hines Drive you have 26 miles of roadway with park like settings along most of the 26 miles.

Very well said, Jeff. I am looking forward to going with my two sons and my grandson. Just like you mentioned, 3 generations. We should have a great time.

I'm glad fot the people that enjoy the dream cruise - I don't begrudge them their fun. I just happen to detest large crowds of people so will stay away.
Have a terrific dream cruise folks!!

Jeff, that was so well said. I don't care for the crowds myself, but for the kids to get out there and see the history of this area at its finest is fantastic. Blue collar: working together / playing together. Bad economy or not, this area knows how to have a good time. Summer isn't really summer without the Dream Cruise is it?
BTW-Can't WAIT until you guys are back on the air. No other worthwhile talk on the radio right now.

Damn dude well said. I live off 6th in bewteen Main and Woodward in Royal Oak and crowd wasn't bad at all. The only traffic I noticed was on Woodward itself.
Did anyone else see cops shinebox Don Shane for blocking a street during a live shot on channel 7's coverage? He got manhandled.

God I can't wait for you guys to be back. January can't get here soon enough.

I absolutely agree Jeff. I look forward to the cruise every year; I enjoy pretty much everything about it.
This year I have two complaints though. The first is how all the businesses along Woodward barricade off the grass easement (which is public property) along Woodward for their own private parties but yet have the nerve to have a booth set up to hawk their crap to passersby.
My second complaint came at the end of the night. My daughter had a baby two weeks ago, there were complications. The baby is in the NICU at Royal Oak Beaumont. Getting in and out of there during the day was really not bad if you did it right, although I did notice a whole lot of a$$holes parking in the hospital parking and walking down to the cruise. Anyways I went to pickup my daughter from the hospital around 8 and went up to see the baby. We left around 9:20, after the cops started clearing Woodward. I figured I would pull out on east bound 13 mile and go down to John R to get where we had to go. For some strange reason the intelligent officers of the Royal Joke police department forced us off of 13 mile and on to Woodward. Is it just me? If you are trying to clear Woodward why in the world would you force people off of a mile road and on to the road you are trying to clear?
I realize I am not charged with public safety as these Einstein’s are but if you force the people on Woodward off onto the mile roads instead of the other way around you would clear Woodward a whole lot faster
