I'M FAT, AND SOME OTHER STUFF

Okay, the important stuff first. Barack won Guam by 7 votes. I can't ever remember an election year where Guam got so much coverage, lol. Weird thing is Guam's not allowed to cast votes for the actual election in November, but they play a role in the nominations.

Speaking of voting, our former traffic woman Nicole Salem has now made the top 8 in the WRIF Rock Girl contest. Apparently her having a penis didn't set her back the way I thought it would. GO NICOLE! Support her and keep her off the streets, because the sugar daddy she might otherwise have to latch onto could be your son.

Remember the story of Rudy so drunk he stumbled into the wrong and vacant apartment and he thought he was robbed? (see previous post) Well there's an update. What I didn't know at the time was that once he stumbled back out of there realizing his mistake, he left his keys inside. He got back to his apartment through the unlocked sliding glass door which is how this whole thing got started, and the only key he's had for a week and a half was his spare car key. No apartment key, no mailbox key, no key to his mom's house, etc.. I asked why didn't he just go back to the vacant apartment and see if the door was still unlocked and go in and fetch them. He said because he didn't remember where in his complex it was. I said why don't you go to the office and tell them. He said because he didn't want them to know he was that drunk. So today he saw a couple maintenance guys outside his apartment, his real apartment, and went to them for help. Rudy got his keys back. Let us know about your next train wreck Rudy.

You read this Goodman report on how the mayor should be removed from office? If not click here http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080505/NEWS01/80505023
And did you hear Kwame's response to this? His office is calling it a "witch hunt".
A witch hunt.
Kwame, witches weren't real. Scumbags are.

Okay, the weight thing. This is completely humiliating but I thought if I'm finally going to fix this problem in my life maybe by letting everyone in on it it might help keep me motivated not to quit on myself. I am in the worst shape of my life. My weight's been up and down for years. Being a type 1 diabetic doesn't help. When I first came to the old WKRK in August of 1999, my weight was disgustingly down...down to 138 pounds. For a six foot tall person, 138 pounds is not good. Well, neither is 252. I can't believe it myself but that's where I am right now. I'm completely embarrassed and disgusted with myself. I can use all the handy excuses about insulin putting weight on you which it does (see articles on diabulemia), but all that really means is I just needed to work that much harder than a healthy person to lose each pound, and I've failed myself miserably. Tomorrow morning I'm starting a Body for Life program. I was having great success with this last summer, but then they moved us suddenly to morning drive and it completely upended my sleep world and schedule, but while true its really just another excuse, and I fell away from it for 3 weeks. Then I got back into it full steam for one solid week, and at the end of that week, a Saturday, I was running my 3rd run of the week, when the ligament in my right foot went. Had to lay off it again, saw doctors, got orthotics for the shoes, blah blah blah, but in the end I just quit myself again. And here I am. So tomorrow morning I'm starting all over, and it is going to take a long time. But I must do this. I want to be able to play with my kids without getting tired. See them grow up. Not have people stop me asking for Louie Anderson's autograph. Okay, that one's a joke. But I thought if I publicly came out and admitted how horribly out of shape I've become, it might serve to keep my fat ass on track and fix this thing. So tomorrow at 6 am the fat war begins.

First of all I wanted to say, Jeff, I really wish you the best of luck in your new health regimen. Good for you taking your health seriously. As a husband and father, there are people that need you around for a very long time. My dad never bothered to take his health seriously and when I was 6 years old, he died of a massive heart attack- he was your age. The effort you are making is awesome. I know what it's like to get discouraged- especially having had plantar fascitis (not even gonna try too spell it) myself- There were days I couldn't even WALK, or touch the bottom of my foot- so I don't know how you managed to run. Next thing- seriously, I want everyone to know how awesome I think Jeff is for mentioning me being in the WRIF Rock Girl Contest and helping me get votes. So to Jeff for going to the trouble to help me out, and everyone who reads his blog that voted for me- Thank you. From the bottom of my heart.

It's hell getting old isn't it? Keep taking the workout thing one day at a time. Even if you screw up a day or two, remember it's for your kids...

So no mention of Drew leaving WRIF. That's speaking volumes to me!!!! But when???

Jeff...you can do it! For the longest time I was 105 lbs. Then age caught up with me. I remember myself saying "They call it a muffin top because they want to lighten the subject and call it something sweet and cute, when in fact...yer FAT!". Well, karma is a bitch. Can't fit in my damn pants anymore *shopping excuse!*
My father is a diabetic, and since I get every damn genetic belch my father has (epilepsy, high blood pressure, food allergies, bad eyesight)...I'm expecting it.
Keep us all updated on your progress.
One more thing....Bill...post a damn blog ya pain in the ass!
Ok, time for word verification...*squints and types slowly* ehgd..

Jeff, reading the white text on a dark background makes it hard as hell to read the black text comments on the white background. It plays tricks on your eyes. Good luck losing weight, my wife has lost 40 pounds since new years, and she's still going. Just a treadmill and a low caloric intake, and I have my hot wife back.
PS scott is disgusting, just kidding scott!

RE: Nicole's post...

did you notice that he said you had a penis? How's Trevor doing? My snakes are kinda hungry :)

Jeff, I'm getting married in 5 months and I need to lose some weight FAST. What is this thing you're doing? I really just need to walk every day, but my only free time is at about 5:00AM and that's my time to be lazy and sit on the computer :( Can't give that up to walk!

Good luck on everything. Lets see some before and after shots with you wearing your old pants like Jared the Subway guy!

Jeff,
Good luck in your weight loss endeavor. I never thought the saying that "when you get older, it's harder to lose" was true. But I'm 46 and decided on New Year's day to stop eating crap I shouldn't eat, and get moving. I've lost 20+ pounds. I find that just walking 2.5 miles per day helps immensely. Everyone always wants to do some fad diet, buy exercise equipment to hang their clothes on, etc. But WALK, WALK, WALK! Eat less - move more. If you really want to do it, you'll succeed.
WHEN ARE YOU GUYS COMING BACK ON THE AIR?

Hi Jeff. First of all, we love you no matter how skinny or fat you are. Just as long as you don't start SOUNDING like Louie Anderson - that might not be such a great radio voice.

Second of all, good for you for starting a health regimen for the right reasons. You're kids will thank you for it when you're 92.

Third of all...well, there is no third of all. But good luck! We're here for you!

Hey, Jeff. Long time, first time. :) Anyway, my dad's a type II diabetic, so I don't know if this advice will help or not, but I figure I'll pass on the info anyway. Never know what could help - especially given the diabetes issue. You may want to talk to your doc about Byetta. It's only approved for diabetics currently, so who knows? My dad's down to 220 after 6-8 months, so it might be worth checking out: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/byetta/AN01315

I wish you all the luck with your healthy goals! I started taking care of myself in November and since then have lost 38 pounds!!! Go me! everyone is asking me how I did it. honestly? All I have done is stopped drinking pop and cutting my portions and eating better things for me than processed slop. However, I will say this, in order to make a “diet” work, you have to have days of where you eat what you want. If you want that pizza, do it. want that loaded burger, do it. if you don’t cheat once a week or once every few weeks you will lose interest in your diet.

Good luck!!!!!

Best of luck to you, Jeff. My husband was diagnosed as "pre-diabetic" in December 2006. The doctor started prescribing a ton of meds and he asked "what if I lose weight?" She said it won't matter, for the rest of your life it will be "pills, pills, pills." Of course, he changed doctors immediately and we both changed our eating habits and started exercising using the information from a book titled "The New Glucose Revolution for Diabetics."

We never felt deprived and he lost 35 pounds (I lost 25 pounds!) in around five months and we have kept it off. (Yes it was easier and quicker for him, seems like it always is for men.) He is down to his ideal weight and his blood sugar is normal.

I realize you are type 1 and there is a tremendous difference, but I also know you can do it! Thinking about your beautiful wife and adorable children won't be all the motivation you need, but it should help. Also consider your fans:)

Of course, I believe coming back on air in the afternoons in Detroit would be the most help! Seriously, know that all of your deovoted fans are behind you. In fact, we would all probably be willing to walk with you just to hear your voice again!! I know that I would! Best of luck to you, Jeff, and I think you did the right thing by posting it here.

Congrats to Nicole!!!

Can I do the eulogy, or should we book Betty Crocker? We could ask Hungry Jack and Cap’t Crunch to be pallbearers… I was wondering why Greenpeace kept trying to push you in the water. You went to haul ass, but had to make two trips. Then you got on that talking scale and it told you to get the hell off. Heck – we had to take a cab just to get on your bad side. And I was wondering why that restaurant by your house installed speed bumps by the buffet, and why the animals at the zoo were feeding you. Are you still eating Wheat Thicks, or did they just disappear into fat air? Now I understand why the pizza joint went to four sizes – small, medium, large, and Deminski. Hey – Steven Hawking just called – he has a theory about your ass (I could really go on for quite a while if I wanted…)

But seriously dude… you know, good luck with your health and everything. Let me know if you need a good doctor, coroner, whatever. I'm totally there for you. Be well…

Jeff,
Long-time, first time . . .

Good luck with BFL program. I am in a similar position (mid-40's), and weigh almost the same (about 250). Been trying to jump-start my fitness program, too, and I've done two whole days in a row this week (so far)!

Keep posting your progress, and I'll be checking in. Us "fat guys" have to stick together!

Hey Jeff - good luck on the weight loss, it's so easy to go back to the "old" ways. Currently I am trying to lose a few myself - starting to train for a marathon - having a specific goal helps.

Hey Jeff,

I've lost 25 lbs in the last 90 days. I'm staying away from situations where I want to eat a lot. For example, sitting at the lunch table at work where people share their left overs (not that you have that problem), going out to eat, staying up late, etc. I stopped drinking completely (that's hard to do). I never really had a problem with eating the wrong kinds of foods. I just ate huge portions. Plus, instead of watching television at night, I walk. I download podcasts and listen to them while I walk. It's a huge lifestyle change. I realized that I had to change when my father started having heart problems. He's in his 50's and I'm 30. I convinced myself that if I change now I won't go through that. You can't just change one small thing. It has to be everything you do. From the moment you wake up until you go to bed. Good luck!

It takes a lot of courage to admit to yourself that your weight has become a problem, and even more so to admit it publicly. It does help keep you on track, though... one more reason to keep yourself from falling back into old habits! Good luck on your plan, it blows that your diabetes means you have to work even harder than a person without it, but in the end I suppose that means you can be that much more proud of yourself when you succeed.

OK, As a mother of a child (he's an adult now) who has had type 1 diabetes since the age of two, I really HATE when others try to give me medical advice, but, you sort of asked for it.

So, for whatever it's worth, and maybe it's not worth much, you might want to talk to your doctor about switching the kind(s) of insulin you use.

My son's insulin was switched about two years ago and all of a sudden he started to gain weight. It was never a problem before and in fact he was always a skinny guy.

He asked his doctor and the doctor explained that one of the insulins he's on (he takes two kinds and I can't remember which one) causes weight gain in some diabetics. More then the other ones.

Of course you could probably lay off the pizza and beer as well. And stay away from all those other carbs that are not so good for diabetics.

End of advice.

P.S. PLEASE get back on the air soon. I'm still experiencing D & D withdrawal every afternoon at 3p.m.

I really miss you guys in the afternoon!

Jeff, maybe you could blog about type 1 vs. type 2 diabetes and the stereotypes that go with type 2 being pushed on type 1's because people don't know the difference?

By the way, I'm a type 1 and when I started on a pump I gained weight. The South Beach diet (healthy low carb) did wonders. Just my experience.

I wish you luck and I'm glad I found your blog. I miss your show A LOT!
