RUMORS
I don't know where they start, but it always makes me laugh when I'm the last one to hear them. There were rumors even months ago that Bill and I were going back to our old FM Talk station New Jersey 101.5. Then the rumor was that I was going there alone without Bill, which I wouldn't do. Then I heard an L.A. rumor. Many others. The latest is people have emailed me through the Yahoo D&D group about our taking over this show or that show in town. Again, when we decided not to take the offer from CBS (oh, and speaking of rumors we were not fired, we turned down an offer because we felt it was too long under the circumstances and climate of the station) we knew we would be unemployed. We knew we would have to wait one full year because of a non-compete clause in our contract before we could broadcast in Detroit again. So the truth is I have no idea what I'll be doing one month from now or one year from now. Kind of a surreal feeling, but a feeling of freedom too.
Huge thanks to Mike Novak our lawyer/agent by the way! He's helped us through a pretty bleak period and is one of the most honest guys in his business. We'll be working with him the next few months to sort through some things and of course check back here for updates/random thoughts/or even great cutting edge comedy like this: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/the-monkey-bar/4283103834

I'm glad you left the station. You shouldn't work in such a place. You can get better. It will come, one day. I will not listen to WKRK anymore because of the a**holes working there now. What are they thinking??? Wait a year and hire Michelle McCormick and Sarah from mojo and do your own show. Bet you'll get high ratings.

Thanks for the update. So you guys can work, just not in radio, right? Maybe you guys could work for one of the resturaunts you used to advertise. Mr. Joes or Shula's. That could be fun and get you outta the house for a bit. So is Rudy out in the alley with a half empty bottle of Maddog 20/20 yet? So I hear that Beaver married into some money. That explains the sudden interest in golf. It's a pretty expensive sport. Well good for him if thats true. I'll never forget the first time I met beaver. It was at the Silver Dome. he was wearing Sponge Bob underwear with a robe on giving away chances to win a truck and Harley. Ahhh the good ol' days. Well I just wanted to say "hey" as the 3 o'clock hour approaches. I still have the radio on 97.1 but I can honestly say that I have no idea what they're talking about. I can only listen to so much sports. It's just too much. I miss that song that Rudy made up for your show. "3 o'clock time to rock motor city..."

Are you permitted to do podcasts with Bill ? I think that would be a really cool thing for you two to do. It's right up Bill's alley as well. Some of the newer podcasters do them from live locations which could add the audience back in it. It's a real shame 97.1 has gotten to this. I used to listen to it all day long; now I can only tune in about 1 hour a day. That's all I can take, although I do like listening to Mikey V be a complete jerk.

I am really glad that you guys have decided to do this blog. Now no matter where you guys go we will be able to know first hand. I hope that you guys will find some work around here (metro detroit) but if you have to leave the state I completely understand. I myself have thought about leaving this state. The economy here just completely sucks. But thank you again for everything. I have been a big fan of your show for quite sometime. I think one of the first time I heard your show was when Beaver (I think it was beaver) was in a bathroom stall at the airport. And have been hooked ever since. My job is a boring one so I have been a fan of talk radio for some time. And you guys are the reason I switched from all sports all the time. Although I enjoy DFN. I really liked you guys. Again thanks for everything.
January 7, 2008 3:15 PM
I just miss you guys. you had the best show in Detroit.
January 7, 2008 7:08 PM
D&D,
I was bitterly disappointed to learn that you would no longer be on the air in Detroit on 97.1 FM. I know that everyone always says that they've listened since day one but in my case, it's true. Yes, I remember the John Engler interview ("Get in my belly?") I have so many memories of your show, I can't even do them all justice in the time and space I have here. Some of my favorite moments? The drops, of course. Nicole Salem, Stewie, Wonka, etc. I've called in to your show several times but I emailed even more. I was the guy who sent you the story about the oppossum I had to kill in my backyard. I was the guy who sent you that CD of Halloween music (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.). The guy who suggested using the second half of Wonka's tirade at the end of Chocolate Factory - "You won, you did it, I knew you would, I just knew you would!". I remember you busting Rudy's balls about that and me bailing him out. I was the guy Doyle called "the free throw specialist" at your basketball shooting contest for Final Four tickets. And I was the guy who sent you that Christmas card with the score of the MSU/U-M football game a few years ago (26-24, MSU). So while I wasn't quite the household name that Pat "the Weirdo" and Jay "the Cable Guy" or "Super Size Scott" were, I was still a HUGE fan of the show. Over the past decade, you guys had become a huge part of my daily routine. Even though we rarely saw each other face-to-face, I still considered you guys "friends" as you were always there, keeping me company on my way home from work and when I got home. I listen to Valenti and Foster (I am a big sports fan) and they do a great job, but it just isn't the same. You guys are an AWFULLY hard act to follow. What you do is VERY unique. Talk show hosts are a dime a dozen, but the WAY you guys approach the job is what sets you apart from the others. You're down-to-earth, approachable, and you talk about light-hearted stuff. Why CBS wouldn't be bending over backwards for you guys is beyond me. You guys were their bread and butter. There's a reason why you survived when Ed Tyll, Kramer & Twitch, Rover, Motor City Middays and Scott & Casey didn't. People LOVE you guys. You can't buy that kind of loyalty. In the end, it took a format flip and a contract stalemate to finally end your reign at 97.1. It is truly the end of an era. Unless a minor miracle happens and you get another gig in Detroit (assuming you're willing to hold out that long). Or if an even miracle happens and they make you ANOTHER offer once Jay and Bill fail (which WILL happen). Here's hoping for a miracle or two this coming year. Regardless, I wish you both the best of luck in your future endeavors. You guys deserve the best. And I want to thank you. Sincerely. For doing your job and doing it well. For keeping me entertained. And for being my friend.

Wow - it was tough removing 97.1 from my presets. We'll see how long 97.1 lasts now. Was with you guys since the 2nd week you were on air. PLEASE come back to Detroit when you can so my commute home can be bearable and pleasant again. You saved many people from potential road rage in 8.5 years. I never had time to get mad at other drivers! :)
January 7, 2008 7:33 PM
Thanks for the last 8 years. It is a shame the way you and the guys were treated in the end, but I commend you for the professionalism of your comments here. I can only hope you and Bill resurface next year (or at least go somewhere with a decent webcast). This blog is a great idea and I hope you keep updating it so I know how everything works out.
And if you can get any updates on how the other guys are doing that would great too.
January 7, 2008 7:48 PM
Thanks for providing the information, Jeff. I had been out of town and was surprised to find no D&D when I returned. I wish you, Bill, Beaver and Rudy the very best. I still remember all your stories about your former careers, your mom and dad, etc. I feel like you guys are family. It's obvious that you care about your audience, and you have reaped a multitude of friends and fans in return. I hope to hear you on Detroit radio, or at least on the internet somewhere. Good luck, and enjoy your little ones!
January 7, 2008 7:49 PM
Jeff,
I wish Rudy, Beaver, Bill and yourself the best in your future endeavors and I hope that you can return to Detroit Radio one day. If you do end up going out of state, well, we all understand. You all deserve the best. I know you don't want to hear this, but I have no respect for any business that does not have the consumers or its employees best interests at heart. Welcome to the new corporate America. As for Bill & Jay, you maybe able to wish them the best, but I cannot do that. This whole situation was handled improperly and without any respect or regards for you and the rest of the crew. Wishing you guys the best.

Thank you for the update and I thank you for all the years you gave us. If you do get another radio thing outside of Michigan hopefully they we will be able to listen via the internet. Enjoy you kids now because they grow up so fast and good luck in whatever you guys do!
January 7, 2008 8:14 PM
You guys rock. I miss your show so much and never realized how much I counted on it in my daily life routine...until it was gone. I'm hopeful you'll return to the Detroit airwaves in a year, but if you're not able to I just want to say thanks for the memories. It was a great run, and something I am still trying to understand why it ended.
January 7, 2008 8:53 PM
I can't believe i'll never hear the taser drop again :(
January 7, 2008 9:25 PM
I'm really going to miss hearing you guys on the radio. It's been less than a week, and I'm already sick of Bill and Jay. If not for the fact that they still have the Red Wings games, 97.1 would already have been removed from my presets. Make sure you keep us updated!
January 7, 2008 9:26 PM
1ST time blogger long time listener...you 4 will be missed big time...best luck to all of you.
January 7, 2008 10:01 PM
D&D, I was the "farmer" in wing cup a couple of years ago (finished sixth,I think). You guys are the best thing to happen to Detroit radio in years. I used to listen to Drew and Mike in the am and you guys on the way home. You by far were my favorites. It is just not the same turning to 97.1 and hearing about the hapless Lions or endless calls about the same sports teams issues. Whatever happened to fun talk radio? If you guys have to leave Michigan, please do a deal that puts you on the web or satelite or something so I can listen. I realy hope you stay in Detroit but understand if you leave. I wish you guys the best!
January 7, 2008 10:35 PM
I am so glad you have this blog. I didn't know about the yahoo site. the only way I have had updates was through another blog. I am sorry this happened to all of you. I loved your show. You and Bill were one of the only reasons I listened. I don't think I will listen now. Honestly, not only am I woman but I am not a sports fan either. Tell Rudy and the others we miss you guys. I hope you end up back on the air here. Just keep us updated.
January 7, 2008 10:48 PM
So good to see you somewhere so soon with some real details about where the crew is at. I was devastated, yes, devastated, the day of the switch when I went to sing Rudy's song in my car on the way home only to hear the "mess" that ensued on the switch day. For 7 of your 8 1/2 years D&D was on air at 97.1, you were the one thing I looked forward to, no matter what was going on in my life, that I know would make me smile, laugh and think. 3:00 every day, I was tuned in. Every day, even on best of's. "Shall we play a game?" God, I miss that, you, Bill, Rudy and Beaver, along with the "personalities" that were your listeners, Wierdo, Cable Guy, Wingosarus, Ohio Girl who spyed on Tom and Katie... When they flipped to sports and took you off for your last week (felt betrayed, not by you but them) I took 97.1 off my preset. No bad wishes to anyone, but tried again in my quest to fill the gap left when they pulled you (Sirius doesn't cut it) to listen to MCM and it doesn't even come close. D&D was a draw, the "Replacements" (to make a sports reference), are just a quickly fading afterthought. THANK YOU for this connection. I feel like I lost a part of my family with the loss of your show. I am a female and nothing 97.1 has to offer interests me, bad move. All the best to everyone on your crew and I'll look here (and on 3G's site) for where to find you. Nice to know someone (you and G) have the listeners in mind. Afterall, we are who bring in the ratings for listening and the advertising dollars as a result. Too bad we're forgotten so often. Please keep us posted where you go and be able to stream - I'll listen. The best to you all! LG in Belleville
January 8, 2008 12:23 AM
all the best to you, bill, beaver and especially rudy. you guys truly made my afternoon entertaining, whether i was in my car or at home. when you moved to mornings, it was cool, but, now that you're all "gone", i'm seriously going thru withdrawals. i'm another listener who was there from day one. not a rabid fan who called in or emailed all the time but i was there when you were and i truly miss you on the airwaves very much. please keep this blog going and please catch us up with the happenings of where you end up. i think you were well within your rights to voice your displeasure with how rudy was treated. good employers just don't do that to good employees.
hang in there, rudy :) thanks again, jeff, for posting this and we'll all have a good thought for you and bill and beaver for your futures, hopefully here in detroit.
January 8, 2008 12:45 AM
I have been a listener for sometime. I really miss the show. Jeff and Bill always made me laugh.
January 8, 2008 4:48 AM
the tazer drop is on youtube... i love it...
jeff, bill, rudy, beav, your all one of a kind. i am forever grateful for the laughs over the years. I miss you . how about a best of d&d cd??? id buy it !!!
January 8, 2008 7:01 AM
I moved to Detroit just before you guys came on the air. Every time I listened to your show I remembered the first caller that you guys had on that warned you that you where the 3rd or 4th afternoon show on 97.1 in the past month. It was hilarious, and 8.5 years later his warning came to fruition.
January 8, 2008 8:08 AM
I miss your show.
It is not the same without you guys.
Best of luck in whatever you choose to do.
January 8, 2008 8:33 AM
How about the Deminsky & Drew show (or Drew and Deminsky...whomever wins the coin toss)? Pair up the best from D&D and the best from D&M. I think that would be a kick ass combo. WRIF...are you listening?
January 8, 2008 10:22 AM
I heard Dan Zampillo is no longer Program Manager as of today.
January 8, 2008 1:40 PM
It sure is a boring ride home now. Thank you for putting up this site. I want to know where I can catch the first reincarnation of the D&D show. Have you thought about Satellite???? Keep us posted.
January 8, 2008 4:52 PM
I just want to say thank-you to you both for the wonderful 8 and half years you were here!! I hope, hope, hope you will be back soon as I have nothing to listen to now.. 97.1 is off my dial and will be forever, unless of course you went back, doubt it.. I wish you guys all the luck in the world!! Please keep us updated when you can, kids, wives and all.. I will miss all of them!!!
January 8, 2008 5:55 PM
So sorry that you're off the air. Enjoyed the drive time listening to you. Will NEVER listen the 97.1 now, it bores me to tears. Now there is a huge hole in the Detroit air space, the talk format works...theres alwasy WJR.but Mitch's elitist attitude drives me crazy. Guess it's books on tape for me. Truly, best of luck to you.

Jeff I'll never forget all the good and bad times you shared with us openly and honestly as you became a real Detroiter. You and Bill really did a great job here and made the days better when things were either good or bad with us too. I've talked with you last opening day at Comerica Park and I remember how down to earth you were just as you come across on the radio. I hope you get an even better gig and then some in the future because you deserve it. It's our loss, and as usual it's 97.1's fault. The station is one big spin out after another. I'm glad they kept you as long as they did... but it seems now there is nothing left in 97.1 but a hollow echo of what it once was.
January 8, 2008 10:51 PM
This is just so sad, and so wrong. It's always about money, isn't it? Hope to see you all in Detroit radio again one day. A long time listener and fan.
January 9, 2008 1:12 PM
I 110% agree with the blogger that suggested to hire Sara and Michelle and you will get high ratings. I think it will be a great show. I will not listen to WKRK either for the fact that the station sucks now.
have a great day!
January 9, 2008 1:39 PM
Hey, been a long time listeners of you 2 since you came on in 99 (never called in though). Was a little disheartened when they placed you in the morning. Hope to catch you guys on again either here in detroit or on the web where ever you two end up.
Miss listening to you 2
January 10, 2008 6:37 AM
Hey Guys it has been Great 8.5 years you will be missed THANKS Mongo from Wingcup
January 17, 2008 10:35 AM
My husband and I do miss your 3 pm radio show. We have listened to you for years. When you left the 3pm time slot, I did call and complain, lot of good that did. Its a shame that they set you up like that. Who in their right mind can listen to sports radio. You guys were great. Miss you. Good luck to all of you.
Kathy
February 6, 2008 12:43 PM
I really want to thank you guys for the great show. I hope that something can be worked out with a station here in Detroit, but if not I will try to listen over the internet. You had, not one of, but the best radio show in Detroit and I miss it everyday.
February 7, 2008 11:22 AM
It'd be great if you came to a station on the west coast. I've listened to you guys since day one. I moved to AZ a year and half ago and had to listen online then all of a sudden you guys were gone. Good luck with finding a new station, hope it comes quick.
March 9, 2008 4:24 PM
Wow, what a shocker - get really busy looking for work myself and turn on the radio a month later to find D&D in the mornings and Drew gone from Drew and Mike. Then a few days later you guys were gone completely. Sports??? I hate sports-talk! They did the same damn thing to me with WXYT.
I can concur with the feeling of freedom but although I hope you stick around this market through the non-compete, I hope that freedom doesn't last too long. As I say, I was busy looking for work and just got back after almost a year of looking. Wow, it gets hard to make those bills after you burn through unemployment and the emergency reserve. If you guys are still around this market, I'll definately tune you in when you're back on the air.

D&D
This is an ardent fan of the D&D show from India. Used to listen to you guys when you were part of NJ101.5 for the time you were on air. Your show was one of the few things that i missed after i moved back to my country.
I do hope that you guys start an independant show of your own. Do look forward to getting nostalgic i.e. driving down the I-195 and listening to you guys on my way home from work..

You guys rock
